Free IT Career Empowerment Seminar
The magnitude and diverse dimensions of the digital divide appears daunting. The noise and effect of status quo can be powerful and intimidating. Should we just give up, close shop and go home? Nobody told you it would be easy. The free IT Career seminar is a private initiative developed by Jidaw (Mastercomputers) to provide interested individuals with knowledge and insights on how to disrespect the status quo and conquer the contradictions.

Next Seminar Date is: Saturday, May 19, 2012. Time: 12:30 p.m. A Special Session on empowerment of women with ICTs will be held in May 2012 during the FREE IT Career Seminar to mark the 2012 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day which has the theme, "Women and Girls in ICT".
With, or without an improved environment we can always do something about improving our human capacities. A significant factor helping to widen the digital divide in developing nations like Nigeria is the lack of human capital required by the knowledge society. Knowledge is power. The seminar is not about resolving all digital divide issues. The aim is to contribute towards overcoming the human capital digital divide. Infrastructure and access to ICT are critical but what about the quality of human capital? What can be done about the lack of ICT skills and the unequal acquisition of ICT and related skills?

The extent to which Nigeria benefits from the opportunities of the knowledge society depends both on the availability of the right human capital and the nation's ability to harness this human capital towards its goals for socioeconomic growth, peace, health, education and overall prosperity.
Our future is in our people not in the oil resources Nigeria possesses. Tomorrow depends on the size and quality of our human capital. For forward thinking nations, human capital development is number one priority. No discussion; no argument. People come first. Period!
It makes absolutely no sense investing in infrastructure in the absence of human resource development. In line with the need for developing human capacity in ICT, the Free seminar focuses on ICT career development and entrepreneurship, raising awareness of ICT career opportunities and providing information on non formal education.
Digital skills have become life skills and even in ICT consuming and import dependent nations there is increasing demand for ICT professionals and ICT knowledgeable people – globally competitive human capital. Nigeria is no exception. Can there be empowerment without ICT skills? It is impossible to enhance value and create opportunities through new technologies without ICT skills.
Developing our human resource is a major step towards driving national development and closing the digital divide. It is a step towards becoming an ICT contributor, producer or creator that addresses the needs of both local and global markets, rather than remaining at the consumer level.
Advancement in ICT has been tremendous, but ICT is not a deity to be worshipped. It is a tool that should be harnessed for positive change, better life and a sustainable future for everyone. However, the number of people in Nigeria choosing careers in ICTs is way too small, considering the amazing life changing opportunities thrown up by ICT. The potential of ICT is yet to be realized. Isn't it odd that the focus of the youth is limited to sports, entertainment, consumption, reality shows and get-rich-quick lotteries? Yet ICT is a field that needs and rewards the energy, ideas and creativity of the youth.
The seminar promotes and encourages IT career development and entrepreneurship by looking at how to acquire skills, identifying opportunities, sharing experiences and tips for realizing potentials in ICT.
We reject the waste of untapped talent and unrealized potential. Don't You?
